Introduction
The Desk Brief (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website thedeskbrief.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights regarding that information.
We are based in Ontario, Canada, and we comply with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws. If you visit from the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the additional rights described below also apply to you.
Information We Collect
Information you provide directly
- Your name and email address, when you contact us through a contact form or by email, and anything else you choose to include in your message
- Your name, email address, optional website, and comment text, when you leave a comment. Your email address is never published.
Information collected automatically
- Basic technical data such as IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, and time spent on the site, which our web host records in standard server logs
- When you leave a comment, your IP address and browser user agent, which WordPress stores to help detect spam
- Analytics data collected by Google Analytics (see below)
- Cookie and browser storage data (see Cookies and Browser Storage below)
How We Use Your Information
- To respond to your inquiries and publish and moderate comments
- To understand how visitors use the site, including which retailer links are clicked, so we can improve our content
- To show you the correct regional retailer store for your country
- To maintain site security and detect spam or fraudulent activity
- To comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for targeted advertising that identifies you personally. The site does not offer price alerts or email newsletters.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand site traffic. It collects information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your approximate location, and your device and browser type. We also record when a retailer link is clicked, including the page it was on, the link text, and the product identifier, so we can see which recommendations are useful. This click data is not linked to your name or email address.
You can opt out of Google Analytics on any website by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Country Lookup
To send you to the right Amazon store for your country, the site asks a third-party service, geojs.io, for your country based on your IP address. Only the resulting country code is saved, in your own browser, for up to 24 hours. We do not store your IP address for this purpose.
Cookies and Browser Storage
A cookie is a small text file stored on your device when you visit a website. Browser storage (local storage) works in a similar way. We and our partners use them for the following purposes:
- Essential cookies, which are required for the site to function
- Analytics cookies set by Google Analytics
- Affiliate tracking cookies, set by retailers and affiliate networks when you click a product link or by the Impact affiliate script that loads on our pages, so that our referral can be credited if you make a purchase
- Browser storage that remembers your country code for up to 24 hours (see Country Lookup above)
- Comment cookies, if you choose to save your name and email for future comments
You can block or delete cookies and browser storage in your browser settings, though some parts of the site may not work correctly if you do.
Affiliate Links
This site participates in affiliate programs, including the Amazon Associates Program (Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk), Rakuten Advertising, and Impact. When you click a product link and complete a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Clicking an affiliate link may cause a cookie to be set by the retailer or affiliate network. Those cookies are governed by the privacy policies of those third parties, not by us. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Some links to retailers are plain links with no affiliate tracking. See our Affiliate Disclosure for more information.
Price Trackers
Our price tracker pages show prices collected from retailers. They do not collect any personal information about you.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate this site:
- Google Analytics, to understand site traffic
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, to monitor search performance
- geojs.io, to look up your country for regional retailer links
- Impact, Rakuten Advertising and Amazon Associates, which track referrals when you click affiliate links
- Gravatar, which may show a profile image next to a comment based on a coded version of the commenter’s email address
- Our web host, which stores the site’s files, databases and server logs
Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them.
Data Retention
We keep contact form submissions and email correspondence for as long as needed to respond to your inquiry and for a reasonable period afterward for reference. Published comments and the information stored with them are kept until the comment is removed. Analytics data is kept according to the retention settings of the analytics provider. The country code in your browser expires after 24 hours.
Your Rights
Under Canadian privacy law, you have the right to:
- Request access to the personal information we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate personal information
- Request deletion of your personal information, subject to legal retention requirements
- Withdraw consent for us to use your information at any time
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to restrict or object to our processing of your information, to receive a copy of your information in a portable format, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at outreach@thedeskbrief.com. We will respond within a reasonable time, typically within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Children’s Privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we collect. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
International Data Transfers
Our web host, analytics provider, country lookup service, and affiliate networks may process data outside of Canada, including in the United States. Information processed in another country may be accessible to that country’s authorities under its laws.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of the policy. Significant changes will be noted more prominently.
