Ready. Hold events are excluded from the clean-press score.

Browsers mark automatic key-repeat events with event.repeat. This test ignores those events and reports them separately if detected. A healthy spacebar should register once per deliberate press across the left, center, and right side. If one side misses, the stabilizer or switch may need inspection.

Spacebar test: This spacebar test combines a clean press counter with 5, 10, and 30-second speed modes. It also separates deliberate presses from automatic repeat events caused by holding the key.

How this spacebar test works

Choose a duration, click the tester, and press Space. The first press starts the clock. Tap normally until time expires. For hardware diagnosis, run separate rounds while pressing the left, center, and right side of the bar. Reset between attempts so the result is easy to compare.

How to read the results

The count should rise by exactly one for each full press and release. CPS is the final count divided by the selected duration. It is a speed measurement, not a typing-quality score. A repeat warning means the key was held long enough for the operating system to generate repeated keydown events; those events are excluded.

Common causes of failed tests

A spacebar can miss on one side because of a loose or dry stabilizer, warped keycap, debris, damaged scissor mechanism, worn membrane, or faulty switch. Extra presses can come from switch chatter or overly sensitive rapid-trigger settings. Software key-repeat is normal and is not the same as electrical chatter.

Troubleshooting before you replace hardware

Test all three press locations, then compare the board in a text editor and another computer. Clean around the key using the manufacturer's instructions. Mechanical-keyboard owners can inspect stabilizer seating after disconnecting power. Laptop spacebars are easy to damage during removal, so use the service guide or a repair shop.

Frequently asked questions

Does holding Space increase the score?

No. Events marked as automatic repeats are excluded from clean presses.

Which timer mode should I use?

Five seconds is quick, ten seconds is easier to compare, and thirty seconds tests consistency and fatigue.

Why does one side of my spacebar miss?

The stabilizer, keycap, switch, membrane, or scissor mechanism may not be transferring force evenly.
