What each record means

One row represents one tracked configuration on one date. lowest_price_cad is the lowest qualifying advertised price found across the reporting retailers that day. median_retailer_low_cad is the median of each reporting retailer’s own lowest qualifying result. Use reporting_retailer_count to judge coverage before comparing one day with another.

The files also identify the retailer at the daily low and show the number of qualifying listings reported with that low. Prices are Canadian dollars before tax and shipping. Product names and outbound shopping links are intentionally not included in the downloadable aggregate.

How this Canadian price history differs

Most PC part comparison tools focus on the current price of individual products. This catalog publishes configuration-level history that can be downloaded and audited. That makes it useful for questions such as whether 32GB RAM, 2TB NVMe storage, or a specific GPU class is getting cheaper across several Canadian stores, even when the lowest product changes.

Methodology and exclusions

• Retailers: Best Buy Canada, Canada Computers, Newegg Canada, and Memory Express.
• Qualification: a listing must match the exact tracked component configuration and provide an affirmative in-stock signal.
• Condition: used, refurbished, renewed, open-box, and Marketplace listings are excluded.
• Missing data: missing days and configurations stay missing. There is no interpolation or carry-forward.
• Amazon policy: Amazon.ca scraped prices are not included in the public files.
• Revisions: same-day reruns may replace an earlier collection. The manifest includes generation time, source-history checksums, accepted row counts, rejection counts, and distribution checksums.

How to use and cite the data

CSV is the simplest format for spreadsheets, charts, R, Python, or a data warehouse. JSON includes the same observations plus dataset-level metadata. For reproducible work, save the accompanying manifest and record its generated_at value and file checksum.

Coverage and version notes

RAM coverage currently begins July 13, 2026. SSD and GPU coverage begins July 24, 2026. The histories will become more useful as the daily archive grows. A lower retailer count can change the observed minimum even when no store changes its price, which is why every record exposes coverage rather than hiding it.

Is the Canadian Tech Price Index free to download?

Yes. The CSV and JSON files are free to download and cite. The Desk Brief asks for a link to this index or the relevant tracker when you use the data.

Does the dataset include every Canadian retailer?

No. Public exports use qualifying price observations from Best Buy Canada, Canada Computers, Newegg Canada, and Memory Express. Coverage can vary by configuration and date.

Are missing prices estimated?

No. Missing dates and configurations remain absent. The files do not interpolate prices or carry an older value forward.

Does this measure Canadian technology inflation?

Not yet. This release is a catalog of configuration-level RAM, SSD, and GPU price series, not a single weighted inflation rate.
