Those figures come from The Desk Brief’s own tracker, not a manufacturer forecast. I analyzed 783 raw retailer observations covering five Canadian stores and seven desktop-memory configurations. After applying the tracker’s current data-quality rules, 755 observations remained usable. This report explains what moved, what did not, and where the data can mislead if you treat every cheap listing as the same product.

What Canadian RAM Prices 2026 Actually Did
July 24 is the honest starting point for comparing all seven configurations. That is when the file first has usable observations for every tracked size under the expanded retailer coverage. From that date through August 29, DDR4-3600 32GB fell from CA$329.99 to CA$302.99, a drop of 8.2%. The 64GB DDR4 low fell 14.9%, from CA$1,182.00 to CA$1,005.69. The 16GB DDR4 low stayed at CA$159.99.
DDR5-6000 moved the other way. The 16GB low rose 4.3%, 32GB rose 7.3%, 64GB rose 23.8%, and 128GB rose 30.2%. That does not prove a change in wholesale DRAM cost. These are retail kit lows, so availability, product mix, promotions, and third-party inventory all get a vote. It does prove that a Canadian shopper following these configurations did not see broad DDR5 relief during the common window.

The 32GB DDR5 Upgrade Tax
On July 24, the lowest qualifying 32GB DDR4 kit was CA$329.99 and the DDR5-6000 equivalent was CA$549.99. The gap was CA$220.00, or 66.7% of the DDR4 price. By August 29, DDR4 had reached CA$302.99 while DDR5 had climbed to CA$589.99. The gap became CA$287.00, or 94.7%.
Put differently, the current DDR5 kit costs 1.95 times as much per gigabyte as the current 32GB DDR4 low. The older generation also reached its tracked low on August 25 and held that CA$302.99 price through five consecutive collection dates. The late-August reading is a level, not a one-day coupon that wandered into the dataset and left before breakfast.
The 32GB DDR5 series is still the least volatile DDR5 configuration. From July 24 onward, it stayed between CA$549.99 and CA$589.99, with a population coefficient of variation of 1.3%. Stability is useful, but stable and cheap are different words. This kit is the calmest passenger on a bus travelling in the wrong direction.
Results by Configuration
The common-window table keeps every percentage on the same 37-day interval. Using each configuration’s first-ever observation would mix July 13, July 20, and July 24 baselines, which can manufacture a cleaner headline than the file deserves.

The 128GB Problem
The 128GB series made its large move between August 17 and August 18. Its lowest observed DDR5-6000 kit rose from CA$3,689.99 to CA$4,789.99, a one-day increase of CA$1,100.00 or 29.8%. It ended August 29 at CA$4,789.99, which is CA$1,110.00 above the July 24 baseline.

There is a catch in the study data: 128GB coverage came from one retailer throughout this window. The price jump is real for the tracked listing pool, but it is not evidence that every Canadian 128GB kit rose by the same amount. I would cite it as a tracked-low discontinuity, not a national market average.
Which Retailer Won Most Often
A simple tally makes Newegg look dominant: it supplied 43.5% of all 275 configuration-date lows. That result is biased by 57 events with only one reporting retailer, including the entire 128GB series. I therefore calculated a second rate using only the 218 events where at least two retailers supplied usable observations. Tied lows were divided equally.

Memory Express took 17.9% of competitive lows, Canada Computers 13.1%, and Best Buy Canada 0.5%. The winner also changed by capacity. Newegg was strongest in the 32GB DDR5 observations, Amazon led many 16GB DDR5 and 64GB events, and Memory Express dominated 16GB DDR4. Checking one store is convenient. It is not a pricing strategy.
Current Price per GB
Price per gigabyte strips out the obvious capacity difference, but it exposes two separate markets. At mainstream 16GB and 32GB sizes, DDR4 costs CA$9.47 to CA$10.00 per GB. DDR5-6000 costs CA$18.44 to CA$19.87 per GB at 16GB through 64GB. The 128GB result is a severe outlier at CA$37.42 per GB.

Methodology and Data Limitations
The source file contains 783 JSONL rows dated July 13 through August 29, a 48-day calendar span. There are 42 successful collection dates because July 14 through July 19 have no records. The tracker queries Amazon.ca, Best Buy Canada, Canada Computers, Memory Express, and Newegg Canada for qualifying in-stock desktop kits. It excludes laptop memory, single modules, server ECC, prebuilts, used products, open-box listings, and obvious price outliers. I normalized two July 13 legacy labels into the equivalent DDR5-6000 16GB and 64GB groups. I also applied the live tracker’s current read-time filter, which removes 28 historical Best Buy rows later identified as Marketplace, refurbished, or otherwise non-new. That leaves 755 usable retailer observations and 275 configuration-date events. No missing date or price was interpolated.
Each plotted point is the lowest qualifying listing among the retailers available for that configuration and date. It is not an average, a fixed-SKU index, or wholesale DRAM pricing. A change can therefore reflect a sale ending, one product disappearing, or retailer coverage changing. The common July 24 baseline reduces that problem, but does not eliminate it.

What the Data Means for Buyers
Canadian RAM prices 2026 currently favour a capacity upgrade on an existing DDR4 platform. A 32GB DDR4-3600 kit is at the study’s tracked low, and the DDR5-6000 32GB premium is close to 95%. If the processor and motherboard still meet your needs, paying that premium for a full platform change requires a performance reason beyond the memory label.
A new DDR5-only build is a different decision. You cannot put DDR4 into a DDR5 motherboard, so the practical comparison becomes buying now versus waiting, not substituting the older kit. I would be cautious above 32GB in either generation. The tracked DDR4 64GB price is weak per gigabyte, while DDR5 64GB and 128GB moved sharply. More capacity can still be necessary, especially for local AI, but necessity and value have never been close friends.
