- Set aside 30-60 minutes in the last week of December or first week of January. Rushed goal setting produces vague goals.
- Set goals in all four areas before prioritising any of them. People who only set career goals or only health goals hit a ceiling because the other areas erode.
- Write your Q1 milestones in specific, measurable terms. ‘Run 3 times per week by March’ is a Q1 milestone. ‘Get fit’ is not.
- Block a quarterly review date in your calendar right now. Most annual planning fails not because the goals were wrong but because the review never happened.

How many goals should I set per life area?
One to two per area. More than two creates competition among goals rather than clear focus. If you have three things you want in career this year, pick the two that matter most.
What should I do if my goals change mid-year?
Update the planner. A goal that no longer makes sense because your circumstances changed should be revised, not abandoned in guilt. The quarterly review is the natural moment to do this.
