How this monitor ghosting test works

Set the target speed, follow one object with your eyes, and compare the edge behind it on light and dark backgrounds. Pause the animation to confirm that any visible trail disappears when the target stops.

How to read the results

Ghosting is a same-color smear caused by slow pixel transitions. Overdrive overshoot, sometimes called inverse ghosting, appears as a bright or wrong-color halo because the voltage correction went too far. Camera motion blur and eye tracking can also change the apparent trail.

Common causes of failed tests

Motion trails depend on panel transition times, overdrive mode, refresh rate, temperature, dark-level behavior, frame pacing, and the specific color transition. More aggressive overdrive can reduce ordinary ghosting while increasing overshoot.

Troubleshooting before you replace hardware

Compare overdrive settings at the monitor’s actual refresh rate, retest after warm-up, disable motion-blur reduction for a baseline, and avoid judging from an unmatched handheld photo. Choose the least aggressive setting that controls trails without visible inverse halos.
