How to Use This Template

  1. Fill in income and all known fixed expenses first. These define how much is left for variable spending, savings, and debt before you make a single discretionary choice.
  2. Set your variable spending budgets before the month begins, not in the middle of it. Budgeting mid-month is just tracking with extra steps.
  3. Update the variable spending columns weekly, not at month-end. Monthly review of spending after the fact produces regret. Weekly updates allow correction.
  4. Calculate the net result at month-end even if it is negative. Especially if it is negative. Tracking a deficit consistently is what changes the behaviour that causes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fixed and variable expenses?

Fixed expenses are the same amount every month: rent, mortgage, car payment, subscriptions. Variable expenses change based on your choices: groceries, dining out, entertainment, clothing.

How many variable spending categories should I use?

Start with five or six at most. Groceries, dining, transport, entertainment, personal care, and miscellaneous covers most people’s variable spending. Add categories only when you need to isolate a specific problem area.

Should I track every single purchase?

You do not need to log each individual transaction. Weekly category totals are enough for the tracker to be useful. Use your bank app to tally each category weekly.

Is this tracker free?

Yes, completely free. No email required. Print a fresh copy each month.
